Better than First Class: The luxurious beginnings of international air travel in India

The article first appeared in Scroll.in on October 16, 2025.

In the 1930s, a London-to-Rangoon ticket cost a fortune and took eight days, but included fine dining and overnight stops in the world’s best hotels. A few months after JRD Tata piloted India’s first commercial flight from Karachi to Bombay’s Juhu Air Strip in October 1932, several airlines began offering domestic services across undivided India. Among these early carriers was Indian Trans-Continental Airways, which went beyond the subcontinental skies – connecting Indian cities to the Middle East, Europe and London through a partnership with Imperial Airways.

Veeraswamy Restaurant, London

Leading British chefs appeal to save London’s iconic Indian restaurant Veeraswamy

The article first appeared in The Tribune on November 13, 2025. Some of Britain’s leading chefs across cuisines on Thursday came out fighting in favour of one of London’s oldest Indian restaurants, Veeraswamy, which is battling the threat of losing its iconic central location on Regent Street in a lease extension stand-off.

In an open letter in The Times, well-known chefs and restaurateurs such as Cyrus Todiwala, Raymond Blanc and Michel Roux appealed to the Crown Estate, landlord of Victory House, which houses the Michelin-star restaurant for nearly 100 years since April 1926, to “act responsibly." Last summer, Veeraswamy owners MW Eat were informed that its lease would not be renewed because the Crown Estate wants to extend the ground floor reception area for the offices on the building’s upper floors...

Zohran Mamdani | Global Indian

America’s Mamdani moment

The article first appeared in The Hindu on November 9, 2025.

Zohran Mamdani’s victory in New York, a city with a budget of over $100 billion and a population larger than that of 40 U.S. States, demonstrates that the political movement has transcended niche activism to achieve mainstream electoral viability.

In an election cycle where the Democrats won multiple mayoralties and governor positions across the U.S., Zohran Mamdani’s victory in New York stood out. Mr. Mamdani’s triumph was singular because of his unabashed “democratic socialism” platform, which defeated well-funded Democratic establishment candidate Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent. His win reflects the growing electoral viability of a political tradition hitherto marginalised in U.S. politics: socialism...

The greying country: Will India’s rising senior population power a silver economy, or become a big strain?

The article first appeared in The Economic Times on November 9, 2025.

The share of the elderly in India’s population is projected to rise from 8.6% in 2011 to 19.5% (around 319 million) by 2050, according to the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. If one expands the lens to include adults aged 45 and above, they will account for nearly 40% of the population— an estimated 655 million people by 2050. Notably, the 45-64 age group is globally recognised as the cohort with the highest net worth...

Bihar

The 1st Republic, the lost Republic

The article first appeared in Business Standard on November 8, 2025.

Bihar, now voting to elect its 18th state Assembly, says with pride that democracy was born here. That’s why Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that India is the mother of democracy.
A signboard on the highway as you approach Bihar’s Vaishali district reads: “Welcome to the First Republic in the World.” This is no folklore. There is plenty of recorded history, rock edicts, and academic writing affirming this. For a refresher, you can swing by Patna’s spectacular museum.
Democracy, the idea of a republic where each individual has a voice and a choice....

The great tech job reset

The great tech job reset

The article first appeared in Business Standard on November 5, 2025. The process is almost robotic. The office entry badge is disabled and laptop access denied before the final email from HR: 'You were good but no longer required. A courier will deliver your belongings.' The sentiment is exaggerated here, but for thousands of employees across the global tech industry, it rings kind of true  - its a new automated way of getting a pink slip...
