Steve Waugh takes guard for ties between India and Australia: ‘Foundation is cricket’

The article first appeared in Business Standard on September 1, 2025.

Former Australia captain Steve Waugh bookended his Test career with Team India, making his debut at Melbourne in December 1985 and winding up at Sydney in January 2004. Having played against several greats, from Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar to Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, he has been to India “about 40-50 times” in the last 40 years.

So, it was natural that Waugh signed up when the Australian Foreign ministry asked him a few months ago to join the board of their government-backed Centre for Australia India Relations (CAIR), established in 2023. Now, he is planning to come to India next month in his new role — and for his philanthropic and business engagements...

Anti immigration protest in Australia

Australia’s anti-immigration group targets Indian migrants

The article first appeared in Business Standard on September 1, 2025.

Police in Melbourne deployed pepper spray and fired baton rounds after violent confrontations broke out between anti-immigration protesters and counter-demonstrators on Sunday, Australian media reported.
The unrest unfolded as thousands joined rallies under the banner ‘March for Australia’ in cities including Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra and Adelaide, demanding an end to what organisers called “mass immigration”. Authorities condemned the protests as “racist”, with Minister for Multicultural Affairs Anne Aly stating they were “organised by Nazis”. The protests were coordinated through a right-wing group’s website and social media.
Flyers distributed by organisers directly targeted Indian migration, claiming: “More Indians in five years than Greeks and Italians in 100”. The group behind the rallies argued that migration had “torn at the bonds that held communities together”.

Indian immigrants Japan dilemma

Indian immigrants’ Japan dilemma

The article first appeared in The Hindu on August 29, 2025. When Japan held Upper House elections this July, the rise of the far-right anti-immigrant political party Sanseito, with its ‘Japan first’ campaign, became a surprising highlight of the polls. As elections drew closer, the focus shifted from real economic issues such as inflation and tax reform to immigration in a classic zero-sum faulty economic argument. The anti-immigrant rhetoric won the party a record rise in Upper House seats. In this background, what realities define the current and future immigration ties between India and Japan?
