Enjoying the vibes of Sandton, South Africa

Being a resident of Sandton for the last five years has been a good experience. Situated north of the city of Johannesburg in South Africa, Sandton is a melting pot of different cultures and as an Indian-origin resident, I could have not asked for more. I appreciate the multiculturalism and the rich diversity that the place offers because it creates a welcoming and inclusive environment.

The place is renowned for its upscale shopping centres such as Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square. These two malls offer a variety of high-end boutiques, multiplexes, entertainment options and restaurants to spend the entire day without literally getting bored even if you are alone. Of the two malls, I am in awe of Nelson Mandela Square because of Mandela’s tall statue that greets visitors. The magnificence that the statue adds to the place is simply superb.

Since I am more inclined towards arts and culture I enjoy the wide array of options available to me in the form of art galleries, theatres and cultural centres, which give me a good cultural experience that I crave for. Since Sandton boasts of a significant Indian community, there are various cultural organizations, social groups and events that cater to the Indian diaspora. These provide opportunities to connect with fellow Indians, and maintain cultural traditions

To get a feel of the history and the legacy that this part of the world carries with itself, Apartheid Museum, Soweto and the Cradle of Humankind are excellent places that offer me excellent learning experiences. My favourite is the Cradle of Humankind because the site has produced a substantially large number of fossils, some of the oldest ever found, dating as far back as 3.5 million years ago. It has been recognised as a world heritage site.

Two of my friends stay in the nearby areas – Morningside and Sandown. Though we mostly meet at one of the malls during the weekends, travelling down to their localities is something that I indulge in once in a while.

Morningside has a serene park with ample green space with walking trails, picnic spots, and a dam. It’s a great place to relax, have a picnic, or enjoy a leisurely stroll amidst nature. Sandown houses the famous Sandton Sports Cub – a well-equipped sports facility. Visiting these places offers a welcome change to my weekends.

As an Indian-origin resident, I find life in Sandton a harmonious blend of cultures, a place where I can embrace my Indian heritage while enjoying the cosmopolitan lifestyle and opportunities.
