India’s medal tally places it at 48th position at Tokyo Olympics

As the Tokyo Olympics drew to a close, India’s medal tally placed it at the 48th position: its highest ranking in four decades. This is a remarkable improvement from the 2016 Rio Olympics, where India was placed 67th with just two medals. This year, however, India bagged a total of seven medals – one gold, two silver, and four bronze. If one were to go by the total number of medals, India would have finished 33rd. However, the ranking is primarily done on the basis of the number of gold medals won. The previous best in this period for India was when it was ranked 51 at the 2008 Beijing Olympics when India won three medals, including Abhinav Bindra’s gold medal.
