An 83-year-old Indian-origin doctor Jasbir Ahluwalia performed 67 abortions one day before the controversial abortion ban came into effect in Texas on September 1. The new law known as SB8, prohibits abortions once medical professionals can detect cardiac activity, usually at 6 weeks. Most women don’t even realize they’re pregnant until well after the 6 week mark. The law has been met with a lot of backlash from women in the US and before the ban kicked in, Dr Jasbir Ahluwalia, an obstetrician-gynecologist at the Whole Woman’s Health Clinic in Fort Worth, worked well into the night to help 67 women get rid of unwanted pregnancies. Speaking to VICE, the 83-year-old said: “Nobody cared for their own welfare. The workers – they want to take care of the patients. That was an amazing, amazing attitude I saw for the first time in all these 50 years of practice of medicine… This was like, ‘We’re going to fight a war.’ This is a war against the politicians, and we’re going to fight and win. We’re not going to turn around anybody.”
