They explain how to implement it in code.” For him, computer science evolved from being a theoretical discipline into a practical tool for solving real world problems and building usable systems.
Teaching and research at the University of the Pacific
At the University of the Pacific, Shounak served as both a Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant in cybersecurity and data science domains. He has supported instruction across seven university level courses including Mobile and Cloud Security, Introduction to Security Analytics, Vulnerability Management, Incident Response, and Digital Forensics.
His responsibilities extend beyond grading and includes designing quizzes, preparing syllabus, conducting laboratory sessions, mentoring students, and working closely with faculty to deliver course content. In his role, he combines research, teaching and hands-on problem solving in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and data science. This experience has strengthened both his technical foundation and his ability to communicate complex concepts in structured and accessible ways.
Building solutions that address real world challenges
Shounak’s research and development work focuses on applying artificial intelligence and cybersecurity techniques to practical problems. One of his most significant projects is VisionCap, a smart wearable system designed for visually impaired individuals. The device integrates sensors, voice commands, and navigation features to help users better understand their surroundings and move more confidently.
The project reflects his belief that “Technology should ultimately serve people.” That principle became central to his approach during the MIT Global AI Hackathon in May 2025, where his team secured first place in the all age category with VisionCap. The recognition validated both the technical depth and social impact of the solution in a competitive global environment.
Research contributions in AI and cybersecurity
Shounak has contributed to multiple IEEE conference publications across healthcare analytics and cybersecurity domains. His work includes research on chronic kidney disease detection, diabetes management systems, vulnerability management, and AI powered cybersecurity frameworks. These projects highlight his focus on applying machine learning models to high impact domains such as healthcare and system security.
His research involvement also includes reviewing academic submissions. He served as a reviewer for the AMIA 2026 Conference, where he evaluated twenty four research papers. For someone early in his career, this role reflects recognition of his technical judgment and familiarity with academic research standards in biomedical informatics and applied computing.
Leadership and community engagement
During his master’s program, Shounak served as Vice President of the International Student Organization at the University of the Pacific. In this role, he created spaces for students from different countries to connect, collaborate, and better understand American academic and cultural environments.
This experience strengthened his ability to work in diverse environments and reinforced his understanding of collaboration and empathy in global academic settings. It also added a leadership dimension to his technical profile, complementing his research and teaching work.

Shounak’s journey has also involved navigating uncertainty, particularly as an international student in a rapidly changing job market. He has faced situations where collaborators withdrew from ongoing projects, leaving key responsibilities unfinished.
In such cases, he chose to take ownership and complete the work independently. He notes, “Nothing comes to you easily. There will be a time when you need to face a few hurdles in life, and if you conquer them, there is a golden gate that will open towards your dreams.” This mindset reflects his orientation toward persistence and structured problem solving under constraints.

His core technical interests include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science, healthcare analytics, and Internet of Things systems. Outside his academic and professional responsibilities, Shounak engages in photography and writing. He uses photography to document everyday moments during long walks in California, capturing natural elements such as sunrises, rainbows, birds, and cloud formations.
He is also an enthusiastic cook, having started learning in the kitchen at the age of five in Hyderabad. Cooking has continued as a personal skill that supports independent living abroad and provides balance alongside his technical work.
