Venkat Nelabhotla: The IIM Ahmedabad alumnus behind Nasdaq-listed US biotech company

Written By Mallik Thatipalli

Venkat Nelabhotla | Co-Founder and CEO of Vyome Holdings

(Jun 16, 2026) US-based entrepreneur Venkat Nelabhotla is the Co-Founder and CEO of Vyome Holdings, a Nasdaq-listed clinical-stage biotech company focused on addressing some of the world’s most complex and underserved medical conditions. An IIM Ahmedabad alumnus who grew up in Andhra Pradesh, he has spent decades building and scaling businesses across FMCG, pharmaceuticals, and global healthcare.

But this journey did not begin in a global boardroom or a research lab in the West. It began in Ongole, a small town in Andhra Pradesh, where a young boy studying in a vernacular-medium government school developed an analytical mindset shaped by supportive teachers, disciplined learning, and a deeply rooted sense of responsibility.

Over the decades, Venkat has built a career that bridges industries, geographies, and disciplines, from scaling businesses at CavinKare and Emami to contributing to global healthcare at Shantha Biotechnics and Aurobindo Pharma. Today, as an Indian-origin entrepreneur, he represents a powerful blend of Indian resilience and global execution, building a biotech venture that is as ambitious as it is meaningful.

“Growing up in a small town gave me perspective,” he reflects Venkat in a chat with The Global Indian. “It built a sense of responsibility and a desire to do something meaningful on a larger scale.”

Foundations of discipline, curiosity and leadership

Venkat’s early years in North Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh were defined by simplicity and strong fundamentals. Studying in a government school, he credits his teachers for instilling a deep grounding in mathematics, science, and language, shaping his structured way of thinking.

“There was always an emphasis on strong foundational learning,” he says. “That naturally translated into an analytical mindset and eventually an engineering orientation.”

But education, for him, was never limited to academics. A close-knit family environment and community life helped develop interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, qualities that would later define his leadership style.

His academic journey, from Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology to IIM Ahmedabad, added new layers to his worldview. “At NIT, the focus was on analytical rigor and problem-solving,” he explains. “At IIM Ahmedabad, it shifted to decision-making under uncertainty and leadership at scale.”

One of the most defining takeaways from IIM Ahmedabad, he says, was the ability to process complexity with clarity. “You learn to absorb large volumes of information, distill what really matters, and act decisively.”

This combination of clarity, discipline, and adaptability became the foundation of his leadership philosophy, one that would later help him navigate industries as diverse as FMCG and biotechnology.

Building at Scale

Before founding Vyome, Venkat’s career was marked by a series of high-impact roles that prepared him for building a global enterprise. At CavinKare, he rose from middle management to leadership, driving a six-fold growth in revenue over six years. “That phase taught me how to think long term and scale organizations with a clear vision,” he says.

His time at Shantha Biotechnics marked a turning point, introducing him to the world of global healthcare and biotechnology. “It was a deep dive into how science-led organizations operate and scale globally,” he shares.

At Emami, he led a comprehensive scale-up, expanding distribution, strengthening systems, and driving strategic initiatives, including acquisitions. The result was a dramatic increase in market capitalization from $200 million to $1.5 billion during his tenure.

Perhaps one of the most defining achievements came at Aurobindo Pharma, where he built the antiretroviral business for global markets from scratch to $150 million in just two years.

“That experience reinforced the importance of execution speed combined with global relevance,” he says. Across these roles, a consistent pattern emerged, the ability to combine vision with execution, and strategy with scale. It is this pattern that ultimately led to the creation of Vyome.

Vyome and the science of solving hard problems

At Vyome Holdings, Venkat has brought together his decades of experience to build a biotech platform focused on areas of high unmet medical need. Unlike many companies that compete in crowded therapeutic spaces, Vyome deliberately chooses complex and underserved problems.

We focus on areas where there is significant patient burden and limited effective solutions. The idea is to stay away from crowded spaces and create meaningful differentiation through thoughtful science.

Venkat Nelabhotla

The company’s work in areas such as immuno-inflammation and rare conditions reflects this philosophy, targeting challenges that require both scientific depth and strategic patience.

Taking Vyome public on Nasdaq marked a major milestone, not just for the company, but for Indian-origin founders in global biotech.“Going public brings both opportunity and responsibility,” he says. “It provides access to global capital, visibility, and credibility, but also demands discipline, transparency, and long-term alignment.”

For Venkat, the listing represents something larger. “It demonstrates that science-led companies with Indian roots can operate at global standards and participate meaningfully in global markets.”

The global Indian mindset

Having worked extensively across India and international markets, Venkat believes his Indian roots have played a crucial role in shaping his approach.

Indian roots bring resilience and resourcefulness. International exposure adds structure and process discipline. Together, they create a balanced approach.

Venkat Nelabhotla

This balance is particularly important in building cross-border teams, especially in a field as complex as biotech, where collaboration between scientists, clinicians, and business leaders is critical.

“Leadership in such environments is about alignment without dilution,” he explains. “You need clarity of purpose, respect for expertise, and accountability across teams.”

Managing teams across the US and India also requires navigating cultural differences, particularly in communication and decision-making styles. But for Venkat, the solution lies in clarity and shared goals. “When teams are aligned around common scientific objectives and measurable outcomes, differences become strengths rather than challenges.”

Defining success beyond business

Despite his many professional achievements, Venkat defines success in broader, more meaningful terms. “Success is about building something credible and enduring,” he says. “In healthcare, it means creating solutions that genuinely improve patients’ lives.”

As part of the Indian diaspora, he also sees his journey as part of a larger narrative. “It is about showing that globally relevant companies can be built with Indian leadership and roots.”

He is equally passionate about the future of India as a global innovation hub. While he acknowledges the country’s strengths in talent and infrastructure, he believes there is still work to be done. “We need more risk capital for deep science, stronger alignment between academia and industry, and policies that enable global integration,” he says.

Advice for the next generation

For young Indians aspiring to build global companies, especially in technology and science, Venkat’s advice is both practical and grounded. “Focus on solving real problems,” he says. “Build depth in your domain and maintain long-term discipline.”

At the same time, he emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and adaptability. “You need to understand your own strengths while staying current with how industries are evolving.” In a rapidly changing world shaped by AI and innovation, he believes human qualities will become even more valuable. “Critical thinking, judgment, and the ability to connect ideas across domains will set people apart.”

Finding balance beyond the boardroom

Away from the intensity of building a global biotech company, Venkat finds grounding in family and introspection. “My family provides balance and perspective,” he shares. His wife Syamala has been a constant source of support, while his daughters, both in the medical field, reflect the family’s deep connection to healthcare and service.

He also spends time studying Advaita Vedanta, drawing inspiration from texts like the Yoga Vashistha. “These pursuits bring clarity and a deeper sense of reflection,” he signs off.
