Shilpa Bhagat: Mrs India World winner championing fitness and nation-building
(Aug 7, 2026) Winning Mrs India World 2013 gave Shilpa Bhagat more than a beauty pageant title. It gave her a platform to launch Fitistan, a grassroots fitness movement, champion initiatives supporting India’s armed forces through Soldierathon and SENA, and promote women’s leadership. A love for travelling led her to explore 81 countries.
“Our country is so crazy about brands. Where is the Indian-ness?”
When the judges at the Mrs World 2013 finale in Guangzhou, China, posed the question, Shilpa Bhagat didn’t reach for a rehearsed answer. “We may clad ourselves with many high-end brands, but phir bhi dil hai Hindustani. Our values outweigh them all.”
The heartfelt response resonated with the judges, earning her the Mrs India World crown, and struck a chord with audiences long after the competition ended.
“That stage didn’t just give me a title, it gave me clarity,” smiles Shilpa Bhagat, Co-founder of Fitistan, social entrepreneur, wellness advocate and an avid traveller in a chat with The Global Indian. “Always wear your values. They never go out of style.” More than a decade later, that belief continues to shape everything she does. Whether leading fitness movements, supporting soldiers or mentoring women, she has transformed a pageant victory into a platform for lasting impact.

Beyond the crown
Winning Mrs India World in 2013 marked a turning point, but it wasn’t the beginning of Shilpa’s journey. Raised in Kolkata in a traditional Marwari family where discipline, resilience and hard work were deeply valued, she graduated as a gold medallist in commerce from Jadavpur University before completing her MBA in Finance at the Symbiosis Centre for Management and Human Resource Development.
She began her career with HDFC Bank in Mumbai, building a successful career in banking before stepping into the world of pageantry. Preparing for Mrs India World involved a rigorous three-month selection process before celebrity pageant coach Ritika Ramtri mentored her at Tiara Academy in Pune. Representing India at one of the world’s oldest beauty pageants for married women proved transformative.

“The experience pushed me beyond my comfort zone and made me more confident and disciplined,” she recalls. More importantly, it opened doors to leadership, entrepreneurship and public speaking while reinforcing a belief she continues to champion.
Culture isn’t outdated. It’s your quiet strength. In a world chasing labels, being rooted is the real luxury.

Building Fitistan
The visibility that came with the crown inspired Shilpa to pursue something far bigger than pageantry. She co-founded Fitistan – Ek Fit Bharat, a grassroots fitness movement that has reached more than 7.5 lakh people, with the vision of making fitness accessible, enjoyable and community-driven.
“Fitistan was born from a simple belief that fitness should be accessible, enjoyable and community-driven rather than intimidating,” she says. Co-founded with former Special Forces officer Major Surendra Poonia, the platform combines fitness, nutrition, mental well-being and sustainable habits instead of promoting quick fixes or dramatic transformations.
Its philosophy is simple: help people replace “I’ll start Monday” with “I’ve already begun.” Creating lasting behavioural change, however, proved far more challenging than launching a fitness programme.
“Building engagement, trust and consistency required patience and constant innovation,” she says. Instead of focusing on short-term results, Fitistan introduced community challenges, expert guidance and accountability that encouraged people to adopt healthier lifestyles over time.
Today, the movement combines online coaching, educational programmes and offline events, while its corporate wellness initiatives help organisations create healthier and more engaged workplaces across India.
Fitness with a larger purpose
For Shilpa, fitness has never been only about physical health. It has become a vehicle for service.
She leads Soldierathon, a national running series honouring India’s martyrs and injured soldiers, bringing civilians and defence personnel together through fitness and patriotism. She also helps run SENA – Made by the Bravest, a purpose-led lifestyle brand that contributes five percent of every sale towards supporting injured soldiers and their families.
My association with these initiatives comes from a deep respect for India’s armed forces and a belief that fitness can become a powerful medium for nation-building.

Interestingly, Shilpa does not come from a military family. Working alongside veterans and serving officers has only strengthened her admiration for the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families. “These experiences have reinforced my belief that fitness is not just about physical health. It is also about character, resilience, service and contributing meaningfully to society.”

A lifelong learner
Shilpa’s entrepreneurial journey has been matched by an equally strong commitment to continuous learning. She has completed executive education and leadership programmes at Harvard University and, most recently, Stanford University.
“Learning has always been a lifelong pursuit for me,” she says. She is also the co-founder of the Women Leadership Circle, a platform that empowers women through leadership conversations, mentoring and community-building. A regular speaker at corporate forums and leadership summits, she frequently addresses entrepreneurship, resilience, wellness and youth cardiac health.
Beyond leadership, she has spent considerable time studying childcare and emotional development, believing that raising emotionally secure children is among society’s greatest responsibilities. “I’m passionate about mentoring young women, helping them build confidence, leadership skills and the courage to pursue meaningful careers.”
Eighty-one countries and counting
Travel has been another defining influence in Shilpa’s life. Having visited 81 countries, she views travel less as collecting destinations and more as creating shared memories. “I’ve never travelled solo. A place is only as beautiful as the company you have.”
Among her favourite destinations are New Zealand, Antarctica, Mexico and the Galápagos Islands for their extraordinary landscapes and unforgettable experiences. “I’m also a complete New York City person,” she laughs. “The energy, ambition and pace of the city resonate deeply with me.”
Her next goal is equally ambitious: visiting 100 countries before turning 50, with Poland high on her travel wishlist.
Looking ahead
As she looks to the future, Shilpa wants Fitistan to become one of India’s most trusted community-led fitness movements while expanding initiatives that combine wellness, leadership and nation-building.
Personally, she hopes to continue learning, travelling and balancing entrepreneurship with family life and social impact. More than a decade after a simple answer about Indian values won over judges on an international stage, Shilpa continues to measure success differently. For her, titles may open doors, but purpose is what creates lasting impact.
