Dwarkesh Patel: Silicon Valley’s favourite podcaster exploring AI’s future and other big questions
(Oct 19, 2026) Known as Silicon Valley’s favourite podcaster, Dwarkesh Patel moved to the US from Vadodara, Gujarat, at the age of eight. Today, in his podcast titled Dwarkesh Podcast, he interviews some of the biggest names in technology, including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Satya Nadella, and has featured on 2024 TIME100 AI and 2026 TIME100 Creators lists.
Before his podcast gained traction, Dwarkesh Patel was uncertain whether he could build a future in the US. In a 2024 post on X, he described how his family’s prolonged wait for a green card left him questioning whether he could build a career in the country where he had grown up. By the time he turned 20, his father, a physician, was still on an H-1B visa awaiting permanent residency. Dwarkesh worried that he would age out of his dependent status before he could pursue his ambitions.
“I was actually depressed that my desire to start a startup or do something entrepreneurial was basically hopeless,” he wrote. Even the podcast he was developing as a side project seemed out of reach. “Working on the promising podcast I was doing as a side project? A beyond impossible pipe dream.”
Then came an unexpected turn. “By some miracle, COVID travel restrictions cleared out the lines, and I got my green card literally months before I would have aged out,” Dwarkesh wrote. “If not for this unbelievable coincidence, I would not be hosting the podcast.”
He also spoke about the wider implications for children of highly skilled immigrants, writing that it was “unconscionable” to put them through such anxiety and, in many cases, make them repeat the uncertain journey their parents had experienced. The post offered a glimpse of the personal circumstances behind a career that now takes him into conversations about how technology could reshape the future.
From a side project to a podcast
Dwarkesh studied computer science at the University of Texas at Austin. In 2020, he began recording conversations with people whose ideas interested him, initially under the name The Lunar Society, a reference to the eighteenth-century British circle of scientists, inventors and intellectuals.
The project became the Dwarkesh Podcast, covering artificial intelligence, economics, science, history and technological change. Rather than restricting interviews to a guest’s latest project, Dwarkesh explores the assumptions behind their ideas and asks how they might play out over time.
He started by approaching people directly. Economist Bryan Caplan was among his early guests and recommended that Dwarkesh contact economist Tyler Cowen.
The guest list grew to include AI researchers Andrej Karpathy and Ilya Sutskever, as well as Satya Nadella, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Dwarkesh Patel has also spoken with political figures including former British prime minister Tony Blair and political strategist Dominic Cummings. Apart from hosting his podcast, Dwarkesh also writes essays and delivers lectures.
In 2025, The Economist described him as rising to become Silicon Valley’s favourite podcaster. His long-form conversations give listeners time to follow complex ideas and hear influential figures explain their thinking, while allowing Dwarkesh to probe their arguments in depth.
Whatever happens next. I want the debates to have happened on this podcast, and to have happened well.

Rethinking the pace of AI
Artificial intelligence is central to the podcaster’s work, and his own thinking about its progress has changed. In an interview, with comedians Konstantin Kisin and Francis Foster who create fun-but-serious conversations in their podcast TRIGGERnometry, Dwarkesh recalled that he once thought the technological singularity, a hypothetical point when AI surpasses human intelligence and becomes difficult for humans to control or understand, was still years away.
“I’ve been the person who said, ‘You think the singularity is going to happen yesterday? I think it’ll take 5 years, 10 years,’” he said. “Even for me, I’ve had to admit that the progress has been pretty fast.”
Reflecting on the debate over AI’s progress, Dwarkesh acknowledges a criticism often made by those optimistic about AI, that sceptics keep shifting their expectations as the technology advances.
AI bulls will often criticize AI bears for repeatedly moving the goal posts. This is often fair. AI has made a ton of progress in the last decade, and it’s easy to forget that.

Dwarkesh Patel conversations explore the possible benefits for scientific research. AI could help researchers process papers, develop hypotheses and investigate problems more efficiently, potentially increasing the pace and scale of discovery. At the same time, questions remain about the reliability of AI-generated information, the impact on employment and how increasingly capable systems can be developed and used safely.
These are not questions with easy answers. The podcaster’s format allows researchers and technology leaders to explain their reasoning, while giving listeners a chance to hear where they disagree or remain uncertain.
Documenting the people building AI
Dwarkesh Patel’s interest in the development of artificial intelligence also led to The Scaling Era: An Oral History of AI, 2019–2025, which he co-authored with Gavin Leech.
The book draws on interviews with figures including Dario Amodei, Demis Hassabis, Mark Zuckerberg and Leopold Aschenbrenner. Their accounts explore the development of AI models, the computing infrastructure required to build them, commercial competition, geopolitical implications and debates over AI safety.
An oral history offers a view of technological change through the people involved in it. For Dwarkesh, the subject also connects with the central question running through many of his interviews: how should people understand a technology whose capabilities are changing faster than the institutions and social expectations surrounding it?
His work does not settle that question. Instead, it records the arguments of people developing AI and gives their claims room to be examined in detail.
Beyond technology
In August 2025, Dwarkesh supported a fundraiser against factory farming, pledging to match donations up to $250,000. The campaign raised more than $2 million, with contributions from figures including Patrick Collison, Liv Boeree and Noah Smith.
The initiative was separate from his main focus on technology, but it showed how the network around his work could also be mobilised for another cause.
The podcaster’s career began with a side project he once feared he would be unable to continue. Today, his interviews provide a forum for people working on AI to discuss what they are building, what they expect it to do and what remains uncertain.
For Dwarkesh, the work of interviewing is closely tied to a broader intellectual curiosity. His conversations bring together people who are building technologies, studying their effects or questioning the assumptions behind them. The aim is not simply to collect predictions from influential guests, but to make their reasoning accessible to an audience willing to spend time with difficult questions.
