Early Life:

Bajrang Punia, an Indian freestyle wrestler, was born on 26 February 1994, in Khudan, Jhajjar, Haryana. He was encouraged to pursue wrestling by his father at the age of seven. Punia grew up in a rural area where his family couldn’t afford traditional sports. As a result, he took up free sports like wrestling and kabaddi. At a young age, Punia’s family enrolled him in a local mud wrestling school where he began skipping school to go to wrestling practice.

Education:

In 2008, Punia went to Chattarsal Stadium, where he was trained by Ramphal Mann. In 2015, his family moved to Sonepat so that he could attend a regional center of Sports Authority of India. After completing his studies, Punia joined the Indian Railways and now works as a Gazetted Officer OSD Sports.

Professional Life:

Punia’s wrestling career began in 2013 when he participated in the Asian Wrestling Championships held in New Delhi. He won the bronze medal in the men’s freestyle 60 kg category. Punia continued his success by winning the bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championships in Budapest the same year.

In 2014, Punia participated in the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland, and won a silver medal in the men’s freestyle 61 kg category. In 2015, he received the Arjuna Award, which is awarded by the Indian government for outstanding achievements in sports.

Punia’s success continued, and in 2019 he was awarded the Padma Shri Award and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award. He won the bronze medal in the 65-kg weight category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, defeating Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov with an 8-0 margin. This made him the only Indian wrestler to win four medals at the World Wrestling Championships.

Personal Life:

Punia is married to fellow wrestler Sangeeta Phogat, and he enjoys seeking out knowledge from his village elders. Punia’s success has made him a role model for many young wrestlers in India.
