Syed Akbaruddin, a seasoned former diplomat, sheds light on the pressing issue of illegal migration from India to the United States. As conversations around deportations and immigration policies gain momentum, he emphasizes the need for robust systems to ensure safe and regulated migration pathways.

“Illegal migration benefits no one. What Indians need are secure, regular, and predictable channels of migration,” Akbaruddin notes. While acknowledging India’s strides in the U.S., particularly in sectors like engineering, medicine, and technology, he warns that the success stories could be overshadowed by unregulated migration trends. This, he believes, is not a scenario that aligns with the interests of either government or the Indian diaspora.

The Indian diaspora, particularly in Silicon Valley, wields significant influence, contributing to the U.S. economy and shaping its tech landscape. While some argue that this influence may foster resentment, Akbaruddin highlights a contrasting narrative. He underscores the goodwill that the Indian diaspora has cultivated internationally, often acknowledged by senior politicians during high-level meetings. “This appreciation has brought tremendous benefits to India,” he says, pointing to the global admiration for India’s contributions through its emigrants.

However, Akbaruddin also addresses the challenges posed by deportations, framing them as a natural aspect of migration patterns. He stresses the importance of maintaining positive bilateral relationships while ensuring compliance with international migration policies. The ultimate goal, he suggests, should be to sustain the goodwill generated by the diaspora while mitigating the challenges of illegal migration through regulatory measures.

Akbaruddin advocates for a balanced approach: fostering safe migration pathways, preserving international relationships, and amplifying the contributions of India’s global ambassadors. This, he believes, is crucial to securing India’s long-term interests on the global stage.
