Gulf News organised the UAE launch of The Global Indian, authored by the innovative entrepreneur Xavier Augustin, highlighting the book’s first appearance in the region within an environment that fostered discussion, creativity, and the changing identity of Indians living overseas. This exclusive gathering at the Gulf News headquarters welcomed editors, journalists, and select guests for a keynote speech, a fireside conversation, and the long-awaited presentation of Xavier’s new publication.

A space for concepts and self-expression

Xavier’s keynote underscored the motivation behind The Global Indian, a book that functions as both a narrative and a resource for reinterpreting the concept of success for Indians in the global arena.

Addressing the audience, Xavier stated, “My aim is to promote the concept… this was intended to serve as the operational guide for the global Indian. My business focuses on developing global Indians, and this book broadens that brand by posing a crucial question: what does it truly mean to be a global Indian?”

He highlighted that the path of the global Indian extends beyond geographical boundaries and is grounded in adaptability, ambition, and resilience. “In my view, becoming a global Indian is an extensive journey,” he stated. “No experience alters an Indian quite like living overseas. It reshapes your thinking, your approach to work, and your self-perception.”

The keynote address was succeeded by an engaging fireside chat, during which Xavier provided valuable insights from his journey as the founder and CEO of Y-Axis, the foremost immigration and career consultancy in India. Reflecting on his experience aiding thousands of Indians in their transition to international positions, he emphasised that identity-driven habits—encompassing the ways individuals opt to learn, develop, and give back—play a crucial role in crafting successful global narratives.

He additionally discussed the characteristics that are often associated with Indians living overseas. “Indians exemplify hustle in the most positive way,” he remarked. “It encompasses traits like tenacity, ingenuity, and a spirit of entrepreneurship. These attributes characterise the global Indian and render them a valuable presence wherever they may be.”

Shaping Global Perspectives

The conversation shifted towards how Indians are viewed on a global scale, highlighting figures such as Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella, along with doctors, engineers, and entrepreneurs who have significantly influenced various sectors. Xavier noted that despite the presence of stereotypes and obstacles, the reputation of India has flourished due to a longstanding commitment to reliability and excellence through the years.

“The world is in need of talent—an abundance of exceptional skills—and India stands out as the sole nation capable of producing it in significant quantities,” Xavier highlighted. “From neurosurgeons and AI pioneers to engineers, developing this talent requires decades of effort. The global Indian plays a crucial role in addressing the most intricate challenges we face today.”

The occasion reached its peak with the formal launch of The Global Indian by Gulf News Interim CEO Vijay Vaghela, in collaboration with Xavier. Every guest was presented with a customised signed edition of the book, marking a memorable conclusion to an evening that blended intellectual insight with cultural introspection.

Given that the UAE is home to over 3.5 million Indians, the themes explored in The Global Indian have a significant impact in the area. This book addresses not just the first-generation immigrants who have established their lives overseas, but also the younger generations who are grappling with issues of identity, belonging, and aspirations in an increasingly globalised environment.

For Xavier, the launch signified not only a significant achievement but also a prompt for action. “The path to becoming a global Indian is a journey,” he remarked. “This book serves as an invitation to contemplate, redefine, and embrace that identity.”
