Indigo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal donates ₹100 crore to IIT Kanpur

Indian-American billionaire businessman and co-founder of low-cost carrier, IndiGo, Rakesh Gangwal, has made a donation of ₹100 crore to his alma mater, IIT Kanpur’s School of Medical Sciences and Technology. It is one of the biggest personal donations that the institution has so far received.

IIT-Kanpur is intertwining technological advances with healthcare sector to accelerate innovation in healthcare. “It is a privilege to be associated with such a noble endeavour with my alma mater. I am proud to see that the institution that has produced thousands of leaders across various sectors is now paving the way in the healthcare sector. More than ever, healthcare is intertwined with technological advances and this school will accelerate innovation in healthcare,” Rakesh told PTI.

The School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Kanpur will be completed in two phases. Phase 1 with a total built-up area of around 8,10,000 sq ft will include a 500-bed super-specialty hospital, academic block, residential, hostel and service block. It will also have a Centers of Excellence (CoE) for pursuing R&D activities in futuristic medicine. The first phase is expected to be completed over 3-5 years.

Phase-2 will be completed in 7-10 years with the increase in hospital capacity to 1,000 beds. It will also involve expansion of clinical departments, research facilities, introduction of paramedical disciplines, alternative medicine, hospital management, sports medicine and public health programmes.

Born in Kolkata, Rakesh Gangwal moved to Kanpur in 1975 to pursue Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He completed his MBA from Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
