I moved to Surrey, England, about a year ago for work, and the experience has been nothing short of eye-opening. When I first arrived, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Coming from India, I imagined a place that might be too quiet or too far removed from the hustle and bustle I was used to. Instead, I discovered a perfect blend of calm countryside, lively urban spots, and a community that makes you feel right at home—especially with the strong Indian diaspora here.

Living in Surrey is like enjoying the best of both worlds. On one side, there are stunning rural landscapes that seem to stretch on forever. I often take long drives through the winding roads of the Surrey Hills, with Box Hill and the surrounding countryside providing a peaceful backdrop. These drives help me unwind after long days at work and remind me of the natural beauty I missed back home.

Surrey isn’t all about quiet country living, though. There’s also an urban side centered around towns like Guildford. The town boasts excellent theatres—like the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre—and art galleries that feature a mix of traditional and modern work. I’ve spent many evenings enjoying plays and exhibitions that spark conversation and offer a refreshing change from what I used to see in India.

One of the highlights of my time in Surrey has been exploring the Brooklands Museum in Weybridge. As a huge motorsports fan since childhood, stepping into this museum was like a dream come true. The museum is filled with vintage cars and racing memorabilia that tell the exciting story of motorsports. Every visit is a journey back in time, fueling my passion for racing and connecting me with other enthusiasts who share that same thrill.

Another wonderful aspect of life here is the strong Indian community. There’s a large and vibrant Indian diaspora in Surrey, and that makes all the difference. I often meet up with fellow Indians at community events or just over a cup of chai at a local café. Celebrating festivals like Diwali and Holi with new friends here brings a comforting slice of home into my everyday life. Whether we’re dining at one of the many Indian restaurants around Guildford or enjoying community gatherings, I always feel that deep connection to my roots.

Adapting to a new country can be challenging, but the friendly nature of people in Surrey has eased the transition. I’ve learned to appreciate not only the local British customs—like a quiet afternoon tea or long walks in the park—but also to blend in my own traditions with those of my new home. This balance of cultures makes every day interesting.

My weekends have become a delightful mix of exploring Surrey and reconnecting with my Indian heritage. Saturday mornings might find me driving through the picturesque Surrey Hills, stopping at local spots like Box Hill or checking out the Guildford Farmers’ Market for fresh produce and handmade treats. Later, I join friends for meals at my favorite Indian restaurant in Guildford or experiment with new recipes in my kitchen, combining flavors from home with local ingredients.

There are times when work demands most of my attention, yet the pace of life in Surrey reminds me to take a moment for myself—a short pause to enjoy a favorite song or a quiet moment in a nearby park. This balanced lifestyle has been a refreshing change from the busy routines back in India and has helped me to be more mindful every day.

Being a motorsports fan adds another layer of excitement to my life here. Beyond visiting Brooklands Museum, I’ve found local meet-ups of car enthusiasts. Sharing stories and insights about races, both past and present, not only deepens my love for the sport but also bridges friendships across different cultural backgrounds. There’s something uniquely wonderful about bonding over a shared passion for fast cars and thrilling races.

Living in Surrey has shown me that home isn’t just about one place—it’s about the experiences and connections you build over time. My journey here has been full of delightful surprises, new friendships, and the comforting support of a vibrant Indian community that makes me feel grounded. The mix of rural charm, urban vibrancy, and cultural familiarity truly makes Surrey a special place where I can grow and thrive.

Looking ahead, I’m excited about what the future holds in Surrey. Every day brings something new, whether it’s exploring more cultural events in Guildford, revisiting the exciting displays at Brooklands Museum, or celebrating another festival with my community. I know that this adventure is just beginning, and I’m eager to see where it takes me next—all while cherishing the blend of new experiences and the heartwarming ties to home.
