Embracing Yokohama for new experiences of life

I live in Yokohama, Japan’s second-largest city which is about an hour from Tokyo and within 20 minutes of Kawasaki. When I got to know in 2017 that my organisation is thinking of my relocation due to its business expansion, I was on top of the world. Within six months I was in Yokohama experiencing the life of an Indian expat for the first time. I have been living near Shin-Yokohama station.

As we Indians love to eat Chinese food, one place that I have frequented since I came to this city is Chinatown. Yokohama’s Chinatown is considered one of the best in the world. I am both a foodie and cultural enthusiast, and this place is wonderful for people like me. Chinese architecture, restaurants and street vendors serving both authentic Chinese, and Chinese-Japanese fusion food make the whole atmosphere delightful. And when there are festivals like the Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival or Lantern Festival, the place is hard to miss.

For a taste of traditional Japan, I go to Sankeien Garden. It’s a beautifully landscaped Japanese garden with ponds and enough space for leisurely walks. The place looks spectacular during the spring as well as in the fall. The garden has been divided into three distinctive styles, each showcasing flowers and other attractions from different parts of Japan.

Cosmo World, situated in the bustling Minato Mirai district of Yokohama has lots of entertainment options. This amusement park offers exciting attractions including a towering Ferris wheel, exhilarating roller coasters, and other thrilling rides set against the picturesque waterfront backdrop. The iconic Cosmo Clock 21, formerly the world’s largest Ferris wheel, provides excellent views of Yokohama and Tokyo Bay, particularly beautiful when lit up after dark. With its three distinct zones, the park caters to visitors of every age and interest, ensuring a memorable experience for all.

Living in Yokohama is safe as an expat. Earlier not knowing the Japanese language posed lots of challenges but now I have learned to converse in it because only then can you feel truly at home in this island nation.
