Embracing Jakarta, a journey of exploration and new beginnings

I work as a teacher in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. I have been living here for the last seven years. Recently I got married and life seems even better in Jakarta now. I was working in Kolkata before moving to Indonesia. I moved here just to give myself a new challenge in life. Having lived in the same city for three decades, boredom had seeped into my life. As soon as I arrived in Jakarta I realised, I have taken the right decision.

Jakarta

Jakarta is a big and crowded town like my hometown Kolkata. I have explored every nook and corner of the city, thanks to TransJakarta, a bus rapid transit system (BRT). It’s the first BRT system of the entire Southeast Asia. The tickets are not very costly and I find it a convenient mode of transportation to explore the length and breadth of the Indonesian capital. Travelling by bus comes easily to me since I used to do the same in Kolkata.

I have been living in an area called Kota Tua. The locality is near to my work place. There are many places to explore near this area. The most significant of all places is Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII). It is a cultural recreational point showcasing all aspects of life in Indonesia. The entire country is depicted in a mini form here. I love exploring the full range of regional architecture in the Indonesian archipelago, in this one place. There are various museums, parks, and performing art theatres inside the complex. One cannot see all that TMII has to offer in just one visit.

We keep on visiting the Grand Indonesia Shopping Town, an integrated multipurpose complex that has a huge mall where you can chill out the whole day, and still not get bored.

Jakarta boasts of some good monuments like the National Monument, a 132-metre tower built in one of the largest squares in the world, the Merdeka Square. Merdeka stands for freedom or independence in the local language. It was built to commemorate Indonesia’s Independence. Jakarta Cathedral is another significant monument of the city. It is built in neo-gothic style.

As far as Indian food is concerned, the cosmopolitan city provides me with options of good eating joints. The most favourite of mine is the Gunpowder Kitchen & Bar. I love eating masala-prawns there. I have plans to spend many more years in Jakarta, now that I know the city so well.
