Leaving behind the bustling streets of Mumbai, I made my way to Dresden, Germany in 2018, all in pursuit of an IT job that would change my life in more ways than I could have ever imagined. Referred to as the “Florence on the Elbe,” Dresden instantly captivated my heart. It was a leap of faith, transitioning from the vibrant chaos of Mumbai to the serene charm of this Saxon gem. The first thing that struck me was the sheer beauty that enveloped the city. The iconic skyline, dominated by the imposing Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), stood as a testament to Dresden’s rich history and architectural grandeur. Every street, every square, every building in this city seemed to whisper stories of its past, and I was eager to become a part of it.

One of the first things I discovered in Dresden was the delightful café culture. The city boasts an array of cosy cafes, each with its own unique charm. For a coffee aficionado like me, this was a dream come true. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the air, paired with the enticing display of cakes and pastries, make for the perfect afternoon retreat. Whether I am looking to work on my laptop or simply unwind with a book, Dresden’s cafes have become my go-to spots. From the chic Zum Schauenstein to the quaint Café Toscana, I cherish every moment spent sipping coffee and watching the world go by.

Perhaps one of my favorite activities in Dresden is taking leisurely strolls along the iconic Brühl’s Terrace, often referred to as the “Balcony of Europe.” The terraced promenade offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Elbe River and the historic cityscape. During spring and summer, the gardens lining the terrace burst into a riot of colours, making it the perfect place for a tranquil escape. It’s here that I often find solace, gazing at the Elbe’s shimmering waters while pondering the experiences that have brought me to this enchanting city.

But if there’s one thing that truly makes my heart skip a beat, it’s experiencing Christmas in Dresden. The city’s Christmas markets are nothing short of magical, and I eagerly await this time of the year. The Striezelmarkt, dating back to 1434, proudly holds the title of Germany’s oldest Christmas market. As I wander through the festively adorned stalls, the air fills with the aroma of mulled wine and sizzling bratwurst, I can’t help but be swept up in the holiday spirit.

The Striezelmarkt is a sensory delight, with its twinkling lights, handcrafted ornaments, and the sweet melodies of carolers in the background. My favorite indulgence during this season is the Christstollen, a traditional German Christmas cake that originated right here in Dresden. Each year, a giant Stollen is paraded through the city and then sliced into thousands of pieces to be shared with the people, symbolising the spirit of togetherness that the holiday season embodies.

Moreover, the city’s rich cultural scene comes alive during Christmas. The Semper Opera House hosts enchanting performances of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” and the Zwinger Palace featurs exquisite exhibitions. The city’s squares, including the Altmarkt and Neumarkt, are transformed into enchanting Christmas villages, offering everything from handcrafted gifts to delectable treats. And when the clock strikes midnight on Christmas Eve, the Frauenkirche illuminates with a breathtaking light show, casting a warm and festive glow over the city.

The warmth of the people I meet in Dresden during this magical time is truly heartwarming. Whether it’s sharing stories over a cup of Glühwein at the Christmas market or joining in the joyful chorus of carols, I feel like a part of this close-knit community, a feeling that has helped ease the initial pangs of homesickness.

Dresden

Dresden has become more than just a place of work; it’s now a place I proudly call home. I can’t help but feel grateful for the remarkable adventure that brought me to this captivating corner of Germany.
