A dream that led me to China, and a life in Shijiazhuang

Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, China, ZIP Code: 050000

Life in China has been a deeply fulfilling and meaningful experience for me. Ever since 2018, it has been my dream to work here, which is why I chose Chinese language studies for my undergraduate education. Being able to realise that dream and serve as a university teacher in China makes me extremely proud, especially because I have the opportunity to teach my own language to Chinese students.

From Santiniketan to the classroom in Hebei

I hail from Santiniketan in West Bengal, India, and currently work at Hebei International Studies University as a foreign teacher. My role involves teaching both English and Bengali to more than 120 Chinese students from diverse academic backgrounds who are learning these languages as electives. Through my teaching, I aim not only to strengthen students’ linguistic skills but also to foster cross-cultural awareness and global perspectives.

Finding comfort, respect, and cultural exchange

Life in China is generally very comfortable and convenient. The infrastructure, public services, and everyday systems make it easy to adapt and focus on both professional and personal growth. Although there are sometimes misconceptions circulated in certain media and I have encountered differing opinions from a few individuals, overall I have been treated with great respect as an Indian. Most people are curious, open-minded, and welcoming, which has made my experience largely positive.

Cultural differences do exist, but I embraced them with an open heart and adapted smoothly. Rather than viewing these differences as barriers, I see them as opportunities to learn and grow. At the same time, I have never forgotten my roots. I continue to celebrate the pujas and cultural festivals here, preserving my traditions and values. Many local friends find these celebrations fascinating and often join us, creating a beautiful space for cultural exchange.

Speaking the language, finding my way

Settling into a new place was relatively smooth for me, largely because I already knew the local language. My knowledge of Chinese made everyday tasks such as communication, navigating the city, handling administrative procedures, and building social connections much easier. It helped me adapt quickly and feel confident and independent from the very beginning. Being able to communicate effectively also allowed me to understand the culture better and integrate more comfortably into both my professional and personal life.

A once-in-a-lifetime moment on the Spring Festival stage

One of the most unforgettable experiences I have had in China was participating as a dancer in the CCTV Spring Festival Gala (中央电视台春晚). It was an incredibly special moment, as performing on this stage is considered a dream for many Chinese people. Being part of such a prestigious national event was both an honour and a deeply emotional experience for me. During the gala, I also had the chance to meet several well-known Chinese actors and singers, who were extremely kind and greeted very warmly. This experience has become one of the most precious memories of my life.

Living in Shijiazhuang: Mountains, calm, and warm people

As for my city, Shijiazhuang is a wonderful place to live, and I have grown very fond of it. The surrounding mountains are especially beautiful and offer a sense of calm and natural balance. Above all, what truly makes the city special are the people. They are friendly, welcoming, and open-hearted, which has made my life here even more enjoyable and meaningful.

Exploring a city where history meets nature

Since I have only recently moved here, I haven’t yet had the opportunity to explore the city extensively. However, among the places I have visited so far, I particularly enjoy Fengshan Mountain, Letai Center, Chang’an Park, the Hebei Museum, Longxing Buddhist Temple, and Linji Temple. Each of these places has its own unique charm. What I appreciate most about Shijiazhuang is the way history and nature come together so beautifully, from peaceful mountains and green parks to ancient temples and rich museums. The city offers a harmonious blend of cultural heritage and natural scenery, which I find both calming and inspiring.

Weekends of work, walks, and joy

My weekends are usually a mix of being busy and enjoyable. As a teacher, weekdays are quite packed, leaving little time to manage personal tasks. Weekends are when I take care of responsibilities such as grocery shopping, meal preparation for the coming week, household chores, and lesson planning. At the same time, I always try to make space to relax and unwind. Whenever possible, I go out to explore the city, take short walks, or simply enjoy my surroundings. This balance between responsibility and relaxation helps me recharge and makes my weekends both productive and pleasant.

A community that feels like family

I have made many friends here, and we are fortunate to have a family-like support system in China. Professor Wei Liming has been like a mother to us, while Professor Dong Youchen feels like a grandfather figure. Because of their care and guidance, we have never felt alone in this new place. Alongside them, we have built strong friendships with both Chinese and Indian friends who have supported us in every situation.

We also have many friends at the Indian Embassy in Beijing, which has further strengthened our sense of belonging. Altogether, these relationships have made our life in China warm, secure, and deeply meaningful.

Indian kitchens, Chinese flavours

I am able to find groceries that suit my eating habits quite easily. Apart from parwal (pointed gourd), most of the vegetables are available in local markets and shops. I have also discovered an online Indian grocery store on WeChat, which has been extremely convenient. Many essential items are available on platforms like Taobao and Pinduoduo, and local shops even sell Indian spices at very affordable prices. This has made it much easier to continue cooking Indian food while living in China.

I have adjusted well to the food, climate, language, and culture here. My friend from India and I cook our meals every day, preferring simple Indian dishes for our regular diet, which helps us stay connected to our roots.

At the same time, we enjoy exploring local Chinese cuisine by visiting restaurants. Some of our favourite dishes include Heban Fan, Wawa Cai, Qiezhi Huacai, stir-fried cucumber with shrimp and eggs, stewed tofu with mushroom and minced meat, and the classic fried egg with tomatoes. We also have a sweet tooth and love fresh fruit cakes and egg tarts.

Holding on to roots while embracing a new home

Overall, a blend of Indian and Chinese life in the form of food, friendships, language, and everyday routines has made my experience in Shijiazhuang both comfortable and enriching. It has allowed me to embrace a new culture while holding on firmly to who I am and where I come from.
