Indians in Olympics
Despite being under British rule until 1947, Indians in Olympic have left a good mark. Indians have participated in Olympics from the very beginning i.e. since 1900 and that too separately from the British Olympic team. However, the Indian national team did not compete at the Summer Olympics for many years.
The year 1920 marked the establishing of Indian Olympic movement. Some noted founders of this movement were Dorabji Tata, A.G. Noehren (Madras College of Physical Education), H.C. Buck (Madras College of Physical Education), A.S. Bhagwat (Deccan Gymkhana), Guru Dutt Sondhi (Punjab Olympic Association), and Moinul Haq (Bihar Sports Associations). India has won 35 medals altogether in Olympics.
Indian men's hockey team has won 11 medals out of which eight are gold medals. The team won six gold medals consecutively between 1928 - 1956. Abhinav Bindra and Neerja Chopra have also made the country proud by winning gold in the men’s 10m air rifle and javelin throw respectively. Indian sports scenario looks fascinating because of the extraordinary achievements of Indians in Olympics.
