Indian Filmmaker

Over the last 100 years, Indian film industry has produced some great filmmakers who have made some really great movies. Some of the very famous Indian filmmakers are Dadasaheb Phalke, Satyajit Ray, Guru Dutt, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, G Aravindan, Bimal Roy and Shekhar Kapur. These Indian filmmakers have not only used their cinema as a tool for entertainment, but used the medium as a commentary on several social and women’s issues.

Many women are calling the shots in the historically male-dominated Indian film industry. Female filmmakers and screenwriters are a growing voice in the country today. They are breaking stereotypes, one brilliant script at a time. Some of the most famous Indian female filmmakers are Mira Nair, Zoya Akhtar, Guneet Monga, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Meghna Gulzar. These ladies are giving the film industry an imperative facelift.

Several feature and short filmmakers from Indian have received great accolades and have even wowed a number of viewers worldwide. The first Indian filmmakers to win an international award were Vishnupant Govind Dhamle and Sheikh Fattelal, whose movie Sant Tukaram won a special prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1937. Since then, several Indian filmmakers, including V. Shantaram, Chetan Anand, Satyajit Roy, Mira Nair and Mani Ratnam have won global awards for their movies.

Various Indians and films have been nominated for the Academy Awards or Oscar Awards in several categories, and many Indian artists have been able to bring home the golden trophy. In 2009, Smile Pinki directed by Meghan Mylan, won the Academy Award for Best Short Documentary. Ten years later, India-based Period End of Sentence won Documentary Short at 91st Academy Awards, in 2019. At the 64th Academy Awards, in 1992, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray an Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement.

Indian films have been screened in markets around the world since many years now. As of 2003, there are markets in over 90 countries where films from India are screened. Currently, two Indian filmmakers - Nitesh Tiwari (director of Dangal) and S. S. Rajamouli (director of Baahubali movies) - have produced the highest-grossing movie of the Indian film industry, with their films doing business of over ₹2,000 crore worldwide. Apart from them, filmmakers Prashanth Neel, Kabir Khan, Rajkumar Hirani and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have also made some of the highest grossing movies.
