Sunita Williams, Sadhguru & Kavya Manyapu: When science and spirituality shared the same orbit

Written by: Vikram Sharma

(November 1, 2025)  When a mystic who has spent his life exploring the inner universe, an astronaut who has seen Earth from the edge of the void, and a scientist who decodes the mysteries of the cosmos come together, the dialogue transcends boundaries. It becomes a meeting point of mind and matter, spirit and science. The convergence of their thoughts unfolded at the Consciousness, Science, Spirituality and Global Impact 2025 conference held in October at Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a flagship teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

At the heart of this global exchange were Sadhguru from India and two Indian-origin stalwarts — astronaut Sunita Williams, who spoke at the session, and space scientist Dr. Kavya Manyapu, who moderated it. Their perspectives bridged the spiritual depth of India with the scientific frontiers of the modern world. The conference also brought together leading scientists, scholars, spiritual leaders, and changemakers from across continents in different sessions, sparking profound dialogues around spirituality and science.

To understand the deeper pulse of this evolving conversation, Global Indian spoke to two experts — Rajyogi Brahma Kumar Nikunj, a spiritual educator, and Radha Krishna Kavuluru, a former ISRO scientist to explore how this interplay between science, spirituality, and India’s timeless wisdom continues to shape the way humanity views itself and the universe.

Exploration: The inner and outer quest

Considered one of India’s most influential spritual guru with global acclaim, Sadhguru opened the session by dismantling the invisible wall between the physical and metaphysical. “You turn inward for pure knowledge. You turn outward for impact, use or utility,” he said. “Both are born from the same human longing to know. The only difference lies in how far we are willing to push our boundaries.”

As he spoke, the hall fell into an attentive stillness. For Sadhguru, exploration isn’t limited to space missions or scientific experiments, rather a fundamental drive, and an urge to expand human consciousness itself. “Time and space is the projection of your mind, if you rise a little above that, it’s all here with your consciousness. If you slice it, you can know anything which you wish to know,” he added, smiling.

The call for inclusiveness

However exploration without empathy, Sadhguru warned, can become perilous.  “As one gets more and more empowered or powerful, one must become more and more inclusive,” he said. “Otherwise you are a disaster for yourself and for everybody.” He cautioned that humanity must not carry its divisions into the cosmos: “If the divided mentality of ‘us’ and ‘them’ continues, humans may carry their divisions beyond earth into space.” His message was that “cooperation is more important than competition.” His thoughts like “the universe outside and the universe within are not two different things—they are reflections of the same infinite possibility,” lingered long.

Sunita Williams on the cosmic view from above

Astronaut Sunita Williams, who has spent 608 days in space, offered a perspective few humans can claim. “When you look at the Earth from space, you don’t see boundaries. You see a tiny ball of dirt floating in this vast universe, and that’s all we know.”

From her orbital vantage point, differences of nation and race blur into insignificance. “It makes one realise that all of humanity share a home together,” she said, her quiet voice carrying the weight of truth forged in silence. “Coming back to earth was one of the hardest adjustments,” she admitted — a reminder that even astronauts must relearn the gravity of life after touching infinity.

Focus and awareness: Dr. Kavya’s Insight

Space scientist and human spaceflight researcher, Dr. Kavya Manyapu’s words revolved around the delicate balance between human focus and spiritual awareness — both essential to survive and thrive beyond Earth’s cradle.

Her reflections served as a bridge between the visionary and the pragmatic, and a reminder that science and spirituality are not parallel lines, but intersecting trajectories guiding humanity toward the same horizon of understanding.

The eternal dialogue between science and spirituality

The connection between these two realms has always been complex — rationality versus faith, the measurable versus the mystical. Yet, as discussions like this reveal, both may be expressions of the same longing: to know what lies beyond. Adding depth to this dialogue, Rajyogi Brahma Kumar Nikunj, spiritual educator and prolific columnist, shared with Global Indian: “Both science and spirituality emerge from the same fundamental human quest — the eternal desire to know, to evolve, and to expand the boundaries of understanding.”

He elaborated, “While science represents the external journey of discovery is an exploration of the physical universe through observation and experimentation, spirituality signifies the inward journey of realization.” For Rajyogi, one deals with matter, the other with meaning. “Science without spirituality is like power without purpose,” he cautioned. “It may advance materially but lack direction morally.” His vision of harmony is luminous: “When scientific exploration is infused with spiritual insight, it becomes a sacred act of service to humanity. It transforms curiosity into compassion and discovery into responsibility.”

Karma, intention, and the future of human progress

“Every human endeavour,” he said, “is shaped by the intention that fuels it.” When actions are driven by ego or greed, even brilliance becomes destructive. But when guided by higher consciousness, it leads to harmony and innovation. According to him, “The real spirituality of the future will harmonise human motives and align the inner and outer dimensions of existence. It will not separate the laboratory from the temple but see both as spaces of revelation.”

A scientist’s reflection on meaning

Adding a scientific voice to this evolving conversation, Radha Krishna Kavuluru, former ISRO scientist and Associate Director at Dhruva Space, told Global Indian, “Humans have always been searching for meaning everywhere. For the large part of the universe, we were evolving, fighting nature and fighting the environment,” he said. “As a human, it is enduring and evolutionary that we thrive for understanding in order to explore and to push the boundaries.”

Using a vivid metaphor, he added, “You fly two kilometers up in the sky in the aircraft — you lose your connection to everyone in this world. You have no idea where you are, just some speck of dust in the sky flying.” And that disconnection, he said, has shaped human evolution and the need for awareness. “Humans push the boundaries to understand and to destroy. And spirituality can only make you sane. And I feel that is very important, as we push science ahead.”

India’s spiritual wisdom met global science

From ancient yogic insight to orbital perspectives, from spiritual reflection to scientific reason, the Consciousness, Science, Spirituality and Global Impact 2025 conference revealed that at the intersection of science and spirit lies a truth still unfolding, and that our deepest exploration is as much out there in the stars as it is within the vast expanse of our own awareness.

In this evolving global dialogue, India’s soft power shone through its enduring legacy of spirituality, philosophy, and consciousness studies that continue to inspire the world’s quest for meaning. The presence of Sadhguru, astronaut Sunita Williams, and Dr. Kavya Manyapu embodied this rare synthesis — uniting ancient wisdom with modern scientific vision. Together, they left a powerful imprint on the global stage, guiding toward inner discovery and universal harmony.
