Farah Khan to Shiamak Davar: Meet 5 choreographers who have put India on the global map

Compiled by: Global Indian
Gone are those days when desi dance moves were purely restricted to Bollywood. Though filmi songs still form a major chunk of Indian cinema, there are some Indian choreographers who aren’t shying away from spreading their wings and making a mark in the global arena with gusto and flamboyance. Let’s take a look at the 5 Indian choreographers who have made an impact globally.

Farah Khan

Top Indian Choreographers

Latin sensation Shakira had half of the world in awe with her desi moves on her hit song Hips Don’t Lie at a concert in New York. The Indian twist to the popular song was given by none other than ace choreographer Farah Khan. After making every big Bollywood celebrity dance to her tunes, Farah taught a few steps to Shakira during one of her on-stage performances that left the audience spellbound.

Shiamak Davar

Indian Choreographers

It was Dil Toh Pagal Hai’s success that catapulted Shiamak Davar into the Bollywood scene in the 90s. But not many know that the versatile choreographer also choreographed a dance sequence for Tom Cruise‘s 2011 film Mission Impossible 4. Anil Kapoor wasn’t the only Indian connection in MI 4, but Davar, too, made his signature style visible with the dance sequence.  Earlier, he added a feather to his hat when he became the director of choreography for Commonwealth Games, Melbourne 2006.

Rajeshwari Vaidyanathan

Indian Choreographers

Filmmaker Mira Nair chose Dubai-based Indian choreographer Rajeshwari Vaidyanathan for her much-anticipated docu-drama A Suitable Boy, and this speaks volumes about Rajeshwari’s work. She intricately weaved the dance sequences in the plot, and the end product was a breathtaking spectacle.

Paresh Shirodkar

 Indian Choreographers

Did you know that the 2015 smashing hit Lean On by DJ Snake and Major Lazer was choreographed by Indian choreographer Paresh Shirodkar? Known as the Indian Michael Jackson, the 40-year-old choreographer is behind the colourful concept and the cool moves that had the world dance to his tunes. Trained in many dance styles, Paresh put India on the world map with his peppy number Lean On.

Ashley Lobo

Indian Choreographers

Ashley Lobo is one of the rare Indian choreographers who is spreading his wings internationally with each of his projects. After being invited by German ballet company Chemnitz to choreograph a ballet for them, he has become the only Indian to choreograph a ballet piece for the Landestheater Linz in Austria. From Canada to the US to Poland, Lobo’s dance troupe is busy weaving its magic across the globe.
