Jay Chaudhry was born in 1958 in Panoh, a tiny village of 800 people in Himachal Pradesh’s Una district. The youngest of three sons, he grew up in a family of small-scale farmers. His parents Bhagat and Surjeet Chaudhry grew wheat, corn, and sugarcane on their small plot of land. Life was simple – the village lacked many amenities most people take for granted.

The village had no electricity until Chaudhry reached 8th grade, and running water came only when he was in 10th standard. Notwithstanding that, these limits couldn’t dim his natural curiosity and drive to learn. Rural poverty shaped his world view and became the backdrop of his remarkable story.

School demanded physical stamina. Each morning, young Jay started a four-kilometer walk that showed his dedication to learning. He walked to high school in Dhusara, the next village over. “I used to walk nearly 4 km every day to attend my high school at Dhusara, the neighboring village,” Chaudhry said in a later interview. This daily walk meant more than exercise – it reflected his hunger for knowledge.

Teachers saw his promise early. His high school headmaster noticed Chaudhry’s raw talent and pushed him to reach higher academic goals. This early support shaped his future path. On top of that, another teacher who spotted his potential urged him to try for the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology, though Chaudhry knew little about these schools then.

Serial innovation defined Chaudhry’s next chapter. VeriSign acquired SecureIT in 1998. He then founded CipherTrust in 2000 and created the industry’s first email security gateway. CipherTrust merged with Secure Computing in 2006. He also started CoreHarbor, a managed e-commerce solution that USi/AT&T later acquired. Chaudhry launched AirDefense in 2002, a wireless security pioneer. Motorola bought the company in 2008.

Creating Zscaler and pioneering Zero Trust security

Visionary approach led to his biggest success. Chaudhry started Zscaler in 2007 with INR 4.2 billion of his own money. This investment was 50 times larger than typical startup funding. I never, ever figured out the payrolls and benefits of a company,” he admits about their work dynamic.

Her calm approach during tough times has been crucial throughout their business ventures. Raising three children and life in Nevada

Family foundation stays at the heart of his priorities despite work pressures. Jay and Jyoti raised three children while building their cybersecurity empire. They now live in Reno, Nevada, where they enjoy a relaxed lifestyle. Jay makes family time a priority and often goes hiking and white-water rafting with his loved ones.

Values transmission flows naturally between generations. Jay’s modest background and family principles have shaped his business path deeply. He teaches discipline, education, and perseverance to his family consistently.

Philanthropic efforts in India and the U.S.

Hometown connections stay strong across miles. Jay visits his native Panoh, India, to support the community regularly. He set up a mobile medical lab in 2011 to give older residents blood tests and essential checkups. These visits show his dedication to helping his roots.

Healthcare support broadens his charitable work. Jay gave INR 84.38 million to the Sankara Eye Foundation in 2023 to help end curable blindness in India. The couple also donated INR 337.52 million to the University of Cincinnati for scholarships that help first-generation college students, calling it “a gesture of our gratitude and appreciation to our alma mater”.
