Arvind Krishna was born on February 1, 1962, in West Godavari District, in India. He grew up in India and moved to the United States to earn a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 1991.
He went on to earn a PhD in electrical engineering from the same institution.

Krishna began his professional career at IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Center in 1990, where he worked on various projects related to computer systems and networks.
