Ghana’s Mohinanis: Enhancing African lives through purposeful business

:

More than half a century ago, Ramchand Udharam Mohinani planted the seeds of a vision in newly independent Ghana. It was one that would grow into a legacy of industry, compassion, and community transformation. Born in India and drawn by opportunity and optimism, he arrived in Accra, capital of Ghana in 1957 and set out not just to build a business, but to improve lives. Today, although Ramchand Mohinani has passed away, his life’s work continues through his three sons, Ashok, Suresh, and Raj who have inherited not just an empire, but also the mission to serve Africa through enterprise rooted in empathy.

With a workforce of over 5,000 and operations spanning 23 countries, the Mohinani Group continues to be a model of what business can achieve when it begins with purpose and grows with compassion. More than just an industrial powerhouse, the Group is a multigenerational mission rooted in Africa where every factory, product, and initiative is driven by a belief that enterprise must uplift. From clean water and food security to inclusive opportunity and sustainable growth, the Mohinanis are  transforming lives and communities across the continent.

From enterprise to empowerment

Ramchand Mohinani believed that the true measure of success lay in how much one gave back. That belief was embedded in every venture he launched. His factories weren’t merely industrial sites. They were engines of social progress. From Ghana’s first polyethylene plant to major players in agro-packaging, water storage, and consumer distribution, his businesses created thousands of jobs and spurred innovation across sectors. But beyond economic impact, his legacy is defined by empowerment, helping communities access better healthcare, sanitation, education, and food security.

Purpose woven into every step

“We exist to enhance the quality of lives in Africa by delivering global local,” the Group outlines its purpose on its website. This purpose has shaped the Group’s journey across generations. With six cutting-edge factories and modern warehouses across Ghana and Nigeria, the Group remains focused on bringing global standards to local communities with products that are accessible, sustainable, and meaningful. But what truly defines the business is its heart that has an unshakable commitment to Africa’s well-being.

Giving with grace, building with purpose

One of the most striking examples of this giving spirit is the Group’s $100,000 donation to the School of Health Sciences at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Year after year, the Group has funded scholarships, supported national events, and launched meaningful programs aimed at tackling systemic challenges like plastic waste, inequality, and hunger.

Their signature initiatives are focused on water, sanitation, inclusion, and nutrition and  are core to the business’s DNA. The Mohinani WASH program improves hygiene in underserved areas. The EDI platform fosters opportunity for marginalized communities, and the Mohinani Food Program ensures that vulnerable children and families receive nourishment during times of crisis.

Deeply anchored in Africa’s story

The Mohinani story is deeply interwoven with Africa’s own. All three sons of Ramchand Mhinani were born and raised on African soil. Their formative years spent in Ghana have shaped the values they uphold as second-generation stewards of the Group. Africa is not merely a market for the family; it is home. The culture, the people, the land have influenced the Group’s principles and business ethos.

Ramchand Mohinani was honoured with several awards and accolades in Ghana. But the recognitions were never about wealth or status. They were about his commitment to community. He wasn’t just a builder of factories but was a builder of lives. The way his companies continue to thrive is a tribute to his foresight. The way they continue to give is a tribute to his heart.

Even as the Mohinani Group expands into new territories and technologies, the foundation remains unchanged: service, integrity, and a love for Africa.
