Steve McCurry’s Afghan Girl on the cover of the National Geographic caught the attention of millions. Her piercing eyes were both captivating and telling of her life in Afghanistan. However, until 2002, her identity was unknown. The award-winning photographer eventually tracked down Sharbat Bibi in the mountains on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. She is among the few people to have been featured twice on the cover of the National Geographic.
