  • Career focus: He is preparing for a FinTech future by engaging in internships and related events.

When Akhil Nakka began the application process for a course in finance in the fall of 2022, he was focused on finding a strong business school, as he planned to major in finance. Some of the universities on his list included Boston University, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Indiana University — each known for its highly regarded business programs.

Beyond academics, he also considered factors such as campus infrastructure, social life, and the overall student experience — even touring several U.S. campuses to gain a better understanding.

This experience helped him visualize what he was looking for in a university, and his search eventually led him to Michigan State University. “What drew me to MSU was not only the strength of its business program but also its vibrant campus life and welcoming environment,” Akhil tells Global Indian.

Additionally, the university’s proximity to where he grew up, and the fact that he already knew a few people studying there made the transition feel smoother and more exciting. “I was offered direct admission to the Broad College of Business,” shares the 20-year-old, who grew up in Michigan before returning to India.

Surreal beginnings

When Akhil’s parents dropped him off at MSU, the moment felt surreal. “I was excited about setting up my room, buying everything I needed, and stepping into a new phase of life where I would be living independently,” he recalls.

At the same time, a sense of uncertainty loomed as he wasn’t sure what to expect or how long it would take to adjust. “After unpacking, I took a walk around campus to get a better sense of my surroundings. I noticed students from all parts of the world, and that diversity added to the vibrancy and welcoming nature of the environment.”

All in the head

Once settled in, Akhil realized that the adjustment wasn’t as hard as he had imagined. “During my time at school so far, I’ve seen that there is a community for everyone. Whether through student organizations, cultural clubs, or academic groups, it’s easy to find people with similar interests,” he says.

He credits the faculty for playing an active role in fostering an inclusive atmosphere through events and activities across campus. “There was an initial culture shock, but the more people I spoke to, the more comfortable I became.”

Finding a rhythm

As he settled in, Akhil gradually developed a routine that helped him stay balanced and organized.

“My day typically begins at six in the morning so that I have enough time to prepare for my 8 a.m. class. I’m usually ready by seven and stop by a nearby coffee shop for a croissant and a black coffee,” he smiles. After his first class, he returns to his room to catch up on work or take a short break.

Around lunchtime, he meets up with friends at the dining hall, which offers a wide variety of options. “I attend two more classes in the afternoon and usually wrap up my academic schedule by five.”

In the evenings, he makes use of the campus’s recreational facilities, regularly playing basketball with friends or hitting the gym. By eight, he returns to his room for dinner.

Campus opportunities

As a business student, Akhil benefits from a wide array of career development opportunities including career fairs, networking events, and guest lectures.

“These events often feature representatives from companies across various industries, both national and international, offering invaluable exposure to the professional world,” he says of his four-year course.

Engaging with these professionals gave Akhil insights into what employers seek, what skills are in demand, and how to align his academics and extracurriculars accordingly.

“Through these conversations, I’ve learned about different career paths in finance and beyond, and received practical advice on building my résumé, preparing for interviews, and pursuing internships.”

These experiences have broadened his perspective and help him stay focused on his career goals. “They motivate me to take initiative, seek mentorship, and continually develop both technical and soft skills essential for long-term success,” says Akhil, whose parents Sridevi Nirup and Nirup Nakka  run their own businesses.

Career plans

“I plan to pursue a career in finance, with specific interests in areas like investment banking, financial consulting, or technology-driven financial services,” says Akhil.

Currently, he is focused on building a solid academic foundation and gaining relevant experience through internships, networking, and development programs offered by MSU.

Planning for master’s

“Immediately after graduating, I plan to pursue a master’s in financial technology. I’m especially interested in how emerging technologies like blockchain, AI, and digital payments are transforming finance, and I want to be at the forefront of that change,” shares Akhil.

He believes a specialized degree in FinTech will deepen his understanding of both finance and tech, equipping him for roles that bridge the two.

“In the long run, I aspire to work at the intersection of finance and innovation — either in a major financial institution’s tech division or a fast-growing fintech startup,” he says, adding that his goal is to help develop innovative, efficient financial solutions while growing into leadership roles over time.

Life outside the classroom

On weekends and holidays, Akhil enjoys spending time with friends — whether going out to eat, hanging out in dorm rooms, or exploring campus life.

“I often play basketball and football to stay active and take a break from studying. I also enjoy video games, especially online ones I can play with friends across the country,” says the business student, who also unwinds with movies and TV shows.

Games and friendships

Akhil’s favorite university activity is intramural basketball. Its an organized club sport held at the campus recreation centers.

“I formed a team with friends, and we participate in weekly games as part of the university league. What I love most about it is that it brings together people from different backgrounds and majors who share a passion for the game,” he says.

Regular play has not only kept him active but also helped build friendships beyond the classroom. “As I wind down for the day, I usually relax by playing video games or watching YouTube before getting ready for bed and planning for the next day,” he concludes.
