When Vinod Kumar Vadde landed in London in May 2024, he stepped straight into a new chapter at the brand-new University of Portsmouth London campus. Excited yet nervous, he spent his first day walking around the campus to soak in the atmosphere. The next day, he completed his registration, and within a week, he was already attending his first introduction and skills session.

It didn’t take long for Vinod to realise that he had made the right choice. “The faculty is excellent, and I like the way the university conducts modules one after another instead of in terms,” he tells Global Indian.

Vinod is currently pursuing an MSc in International Business Management, a 15-month program designed to sharpen leadership and management skills while offering global exposure.

Why Portsmouth?

For Vinod, Portsmouth stood out for its academic reputation, modern facilities, and prime London location, offering access to businesses and global markets.

Before making his decision, he explored multiple options. “Apart from Portsmouth, I had also received an offer from Solent University, Southampton. Additionally, I had applied to universities in the USA, such as Concordia University Wisconsin and Indiana Tech,” he recalls. Eventually, Portsmouth emerged as the right fit.

A vibrant neighbourhood

Situated in Walthamstow in the borough of Waltham Forest, the University of Portsmouth London offers students a lively setting. The neighbourhood boasts Europe’s longest street market, eclectic shops and cafes, art galleries, and wetlands nature reserves.

The new campus has been attracting students from across the globe. Portsmouth itself also enjoys recognition—Times Higher Education Young University Rankings list it among the UK’s best universities established in the last 50 years.

Deciding factors

Vinod’s selection was guided by a careful checklist. “When selecting a university, I considered factors like faculty expertise, course structure, location, and the opportunities for networking and career development,” he explains.

Initially, he was admitted to Portsmouth’s main campus in Hampshire for the January 2024 intake but deferred. The university then offered him a spot at the new London campus for May 2024, which he accepted.

“Most students here are from India, but there are also some from other countries. I have classes every Monday and Wednesday from 9 AM to 1 PM,” he says.

Building global skills

Vinod’s course focuses on equipping students with strong management and leadership foundations. “It will add significant value to my career and personal growth,” says the student, who has had complete support from his family throughout the process.

His program covers 10 modules and a project, ranging from HRM and International Business to Operations, Finance, Corporate Strategy, and Research Methods. While the London campus is smaller than the main one, he feels the learning experience is rich and rewarding.

Challenges of London life

Adjusting to London life came with hurdles. “London is quite busy compared to other places. Initially, I found it tough to adjust, but over time it became easier, and now I’m comfortable living here,” he smiles.

The bigger challenge lies in professional opportunities. “Job opportunities are limited, and securing sponsorship is essential for long-term settlement. However, with a good job and sponsorship, it’s definitely possible to build a future here.”

Projects in action

Workshops and projects have added practical depth to Vinod’s learning. Currently, he is engaged in two key assignments. One is a Research Methods project, where his group is developing a business concept for a food court brand called Crate, located at 17&Central Mall, Walthamstow. His dissertation focuses on ‘Cybersecurity Challenges in the Modern Banking System: Threats, Tools, and Strategies.’ “These projects have given me practical exposure to both business planning and research, which adds great value to my learning experience,” he notes.

Support for the first batch

As part of the first cohort at Portsmouth London, Vinod and his peers receive tailored attention. The university organises networking and introductory sessions, and while most major events are held at the main campus, London students can access them too. “They provide full support whenever we need assistance,” he says.

Career goals

Vinod envisions a career as a Business Analyst, combining his background in computer science with new management expertise. “I want to deliver technology-driven business solutions,” he says.

His long-term aim is to work at the intersection of technology and business, in fields like IT consulting, business analysis, or digital strategy, helping organisations grow and innovate.

Life beyond studies

When not busy with coursework, Vinod spends time watching movies, exploring London, shopping, and cooking at home. “Since I live alone, I also spend time upgrading my skills and focusing on personal growth,” he adds.

Roots in Telangana

Born in Telangana, Vinod’s academic journey began with a diploma in Computer Engineering (first class) followed by a B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering (A grade).

“Academically, I performed well throughout my studies. I wasn’t active in sports but focused on academics and skill development,” he shares. The youngest in his family, Vinod has two elder brothers.
