Studying abroad comes with its own set of challenges. For Shyam, the most significant hurdle was cultural adjustment. Differences in communication styles, classroom dynamics, and everyday social interactions at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) required patience and adaptation.
As an introvert, building networks and seizing opportunities initially felt overwhelming. However, stepping out of his comfort zone gradually became a turning point. “Through group projects, social events, and academic collaborations, I learned that growth often begins where comfort ends,” smiles Shyam, in a chat with Global Indian.
Pursuing an MS in Business Analytics at UCLA, Shyam’s journey from the vibrant academic corridors of Delhi to the dynamic campus life of Los Angeles, is not just about academics alone. It is about discovering identity, navigating cultures, and building a future rooted in innovation and entrepreneurship.
Choosing the right path
After completing his Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Mathematics from the University of Delhi with First Class Distinction, Shyam knew he wanted to build a career at the intersection of data, technology, and business.
However, choosing the right institution was a meticulous and strategic process. He applied to some of the world’s most prestigious universities including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Chicago, Columbia University, and Harvard University for programs in Data Science and related fields.
Looking for more
Each institution offered immense prestige, but he was looking for something more than a brand name. “I wanted immersive learning, industry exposure, and a curriculum that bridged analytics with business decision-making,” he remarks.
Ultimately, the MS in Business Analytics program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) stood out.
The decisive factor
The course structure was a decisive factor. Unlike traditional data science programs that focus heavily on technical depth, UCLA’s program emphasized applying analytics to real-world business challenges.
“The learning model was collaborative, project-based, and industry-integrated, exactly what I was looking for.”
The admission timeline
The admission journey was rigorous and spanned nearly nine months. It included preparing for GRE and English proficiency exams such as TOEFL/IELTS, compiling academic records, drafting statements of purpose, and securing recommendation letters.
“Applications were submitted along with detailed academic transcripts, work experience documentation, test scores, and essays highlighting goals and motivation.”
Interview round
After clearing the application screening, Shyam underwent an interview evaluating technical readiness, clarity of goals, and alignment with the program. The program duration is 15 months, including a three-month summer internship.
“The curriculum covers statistical modeling, machine learning, data visualization, business strategy, operations, and leadership skills—equipping students to translate technical insights into business growth.”
For Shyam, this course was not just an academic pursuit; it aligned perfectly with his analytical mindset and long-term entrepreneurial aspirations.

Arriving in LA
Shyam says the day he landed in Los Angeles was unforgettable. Arriving late at night, he watched the city lights shimmer beneath him—vast, luminous, and full of possibility. “The drive from the airport felt surreal; palm trees lined the roads, and the skyline radiated energy.”
The following evening, he visited the beach. The sky turned shades of pink and orange as the sun dipped below the Pacific horizon. “That sunset still lives rent-free in his memory,” smiles Shyam.
Diversity
Orientation day at UCLA marked the real beginning. Meeting his cohort for the first time, he realized how global the classroom truly was. Students hailed from Japan, Russia, Italy, and numerous other countries. “Conversations spanned cultures, ideas, and professional experiences. Diversity was not just a buzzword—it was a lived experience.”
Inside the classroom
Lectures at UCLA are three hours long, but far from monotonous. Classes are interactive, discussion-driven, and often revolve around solving live business cases, he says.
“Faculty members bring industry experience into the classroom, encouraging students to think like consultants and decision-makers. Most assignments are presentation-based, demanding collaboration and communication.”
Capstone project
Students regularly work in teams to analyze datasets, build predictive models, and propose strategic solutions.
A highlight of the program, says Shyam, is the Capstone Project — partnering with an actual company to solve a real business problem. “This experience simulates consulting in a professional environment and sharpens both technical and interpersonal skills.”
Exposure
He says career fairs and seminars further strengthen industry exposure. “Companies visit campus, share insights, and scout talent. These sessions provide first-hand understanding of workplace expectations and emerging trends,” says Shyam while expressing satisfaction with the holistic learning environment. “The program balances academic rigor with practical relevance.”
Homesickness was a challenge, initially. “Being thousands of miles away from family can feel isolating at times. Yet, these moments strengthened my resilience and independence,” he mentions.
Life outside class
Life in Los Angeles offers more than just academic stimulation. On weekends, Shyam explores local coffee spots, discovering hidden gems across neighborhoods. He enjoys hiking the scenic trails around LA, where panoramic city and ocean views create a perfect escape from academic intensity.
“Occasionally, I drive along the Pacific Coast Highway—a breathtaking route running parallel to the ocean.” Sunny beach days with friends offer relaxation and balance. Within campus, Shyam participates in cultural fairs and student-led events that celebrate diversity. “These activities build community bonds and create memories beyond textbooks.”

Roots and family
Born in Delhi, Shyam comes from a close-knit family of four. His father owns a manufacturing business specializing in gold chains and jewellery, while his elder sister works as a celebrity fashion stylist. “Their encouragement played a crucial role in my decision to study abroad.”
His schooling at The Heritage School, Rohini, laid a strong academic and creative foundation. Alongside academics, he was actively involved in soccer, participating in multiple leagues. His artistic abilities flourished through art competitions, and his musical interests led him to learn instruments such as keyboard, guitar, drums, tabla, and dholak.
“When I first expressed my desire to pursue higher education abroad, my family responded with unwavering support and pride,” recalls Shyam, for whom this encouragement remains one of his greatest privileges.
Looking ahead
Shyam’s future plans revolve around gaining hands-on experience in business analytics and eventually launching his own venture. “My goal is to leverage data-driven insights to build scalable, impactful solutions.”
The MS in Business Analytics at UCLA has sharpened his technical expertise while strengthening his understanding of business strategy. “More importantly, it has nurtured my confidence, global perspective, and leadership.”
A journey of transformation
Shyam says campus life at ULCA has been more than lectures and assignments—it has been a transformative chapter. From adapting to a new culture to presenting real-world business solutions, from sunset reflections on the Pacific to late-night project deadlines — each experience has shaped him into a more resilient and globally aware individual.
“It’s not just about earning a degree. It is about discovering who you are, learning to stand independently, and building a future that bridges ambition with purpose.”
