I made a life-changing decision to move with my family from India to Kyoto in Japan a couple of years back for work. I live in the Higashiyama district, which I believe is truly a hidden gem, nestled in the eastern part of Kyoto. Living in Higashiyama has given me the chance to immerse myself in Japanese culture and experience it firsthand.
The cherry blossom season in Higashiyama
The neighbourhood I stay in is a testament to Japan’s rich heritage, with its traditional architecture, mesmerising temples, and narrow streets steeped in history. I wake up every day to the beauty and tranquility of this enchanting district, grateful for the opportunity to call it home. The area is dotted with awe-inspiring temples and shrines like Kiyomizu-dera, Yasaka Shrine, and Chion-in Temple. I often find solace in visiting these sacred places, marveling at their serene beauty, and observing the customs and rituals of the local people.
One of the highlights of living in Higashiyama is undoubtedly the food scene. I’m a self-proclaimed food enthusiast, and I’ve had the pleasure of discovering numerous cosy restaurants and izakayas within walking distance from my home. From indulging in the delicate flavours of sushi and sashimi at a local sushi bar to relishing a comforting bowl of steaming hot ramen, the culinary adventure here is a delight for the senses.
Gion Festival at Higashiyama
Living in Higashiyama also means being part of the vibrant local festivals and events that take place throughout the year. From the mesmerising Hanatoro illumination event in spring to the lively and colorful Gion Festival in summer, the neighbourhood comes alive with energy, music, and parades. I’ve had the privilege of attending traditional tea ceremonies, where I witness the art of tea preparation and experience the serenity of a Zen-inspired setting. And the local theaters have been a gateway to Japan’s rich performing arts heritage. I’ve been captivated by traditional performances like Noh, Kabuki, and Bunraku, each leaving an indelible mark on my heart.
I’ve embraced the Japanese way of life, building friendships with both locals and fellow expatriates, and feeling like an integral part of this wonderful community. The experiences and encounters in this beautiful residential area have expanded my horizons, deepened my appreciation for cultural diversity, and brought immeasurable joy to our family’s life.
