The Dance Prodigy from Assam: 8-year-old Binita Chetry takes Britain’s Got Talent by storm

By: Amrita Priya

(March 18, 2025) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wished that one day she may own the ‘Pink Princess House’ of her dreams, while industrialist Anand Mahindra called her ‘Monday Motivation.’ At just eight years old, Binita Chetry from Assam has captivated audiences with her breathtaking dance moves on Britain’s Got Talent, turning into a viral sensation overnight and making the entire nation, especially the people of Assam, proud.

In a moment that stunned the viewers worldwide, Binita twirled, flipped, and danced her way into the hearts of millions on Britain Got Talent’s stage. Her electrifying performance not only won her a standing ovation from the audience and the judges but also set social media ablaze.

From her hometown of Amarajan in Assam, to the grand stage of one of the world’s most prestigious talent shows, Binita’s journey stands out not just for its brilliance but also for the maturity she brings at such a young age.

A dream stage and a pink princess house

Clad in a dazzling outfit and brimming with confidence, Binita faced the panel of judges — Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and Bruno Tonioli with an infectious enthusiasm. When asked what brought her to Britain’s Got Talent, she simply said, “Britain’s Got Talent is my dream stage, and I want to win it.” Her answer to what she would do if she won? “I would like to buy a pink princess house.”

Her performance was nothing short of breathtaking in the eighteenth season of the competition, which began airing at the end of February and is set to conclude in May 2025.

With high-energy moves, impeccable flips, and mesmerizing choreography, the eight-year-old showcased a level of maturity and skill far beyond her years. As the final note of her routine lingered in the air, the entire auditorium erupted in thunderous applause, with all four judges rising to their feet in admiration.

A star in the making

Beyond her latest triumph on BGT, Binita has already made a mark in the dance world. She was the first runner-up in the All-Style Dance Competition (Solo) in August 2024 and is a contestant in Danceikon2 Wildfire, further proving her mettle on global platforms.

Her parents, who run a small poultry farm in Assam, made the difficult decision to send Binita to Guwahati for professional dance training. Eventually, she moved to Jaipur to live with her aunt, Anita Devi, where she trained under the expert guidance of choreographer and dance teacher Hardik Rawat.

Winning over the judges

Among the judges, one remark stood out in particular. “You had the strength of a tiger and the poise of a boa constrictor like a python on the stage. I love the mix of contemporary dance with the kind of Indian touches,” stated Bruno Tonioli, a British-Italian television personality, choreographer and dancer.

The appreciation for Binita’s performance from an expert with years of experience highlights her ability to blend cultural roots with modern dance forms, making her a standout contestant in a competition that features talent from around the world.

The Journey Ahead

As Binita advances to the next round of Britain’s Got Talent, her story continues to inspire millions. From a small town in Assam to the global spotlight, she embodies the dreams of countless young talents who dare to aim high.

With each step she takes on stage, she carries the hopes of a nation and the love of those who have supported her journey. Whether she wins the competition or not, Binita Chetry has already secured her place as one of India’s brightest young stars.

The joy of representing India

The eight-year-old also shared a series of photos from the show on Instagram and expressed gratitude. She wrote, “When Hard work meets talent it creates magic undoubtedly. Happy to Announce that today I’m representing India at one of the biggest stages in the world @bgt.”

Another standout act from an Indian in recent years has been Mumbai teen Akshat Singh, a dancer who participated in Britain’s Got Talent 2022. He wowed the judges with his dance moves just like Binita.

Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) is one of the UK’s most popular reality talent competitions, known for showcasing a diverse range of performers, from singers and dancers to magicians and comedians. Launched in 2007 and created by Simon Cowell, the show has captivated audiences with its mix of heartwarming, jaw-dropping, and sometimes downright bizarre acts.

Contestants compete for a cash prize and the opportunity to perform at the Royal Variety Performance. The show’s format includes auditions, live semifinals, and a grand finale, with judges and the public playing a role in selecting the winner. Over the years, BGT has discovered exceptional talents, its emotional storytelling, entertaining performances, and moments of pure surprise continue to make it a beloved part of British television.

In its 18th season, Indians are hooked as eight-year-old Binita Chetry captivates the world with her performance.
