Instant messaging app WhatsApp said that it has removed 2 million Indian accounts to prevent harmful behavior from May to June, 2021. The statement was issued by the company in compliance with the new Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code, also known as IT Rules, 2021. According to WhatsApp it received a total of 345 reports during this period; the 2 million accounts were banned in accordance with its three stage process. More than 95% of such accounts were banned because they had made “unauthorized use of automated or bulk messaging”.
