The number of people living in slums is rising worldwide

According to the United Nations, more than 1 billion people live in slum areas in the world, and their numbers have been growing as urbanization trends continue. Often, these are areas are depicted in the official information systems of city governments as informal zones or areas of development. This gap in information keeps much of this landscape off the regular maps. In a world that is increasingly dependent on the internet for goods and services not appearing on these platforms could mean not having access to the benefits of urban life and development. To fill in these information gaps, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), an international NGO dedicated to open mapping for developmental purposes, has launched dozens of similar projects worldwide.
