The human cost of the Afghan conflict

The conflict in Afghanistan has been an expensive one: especially, when it comes to human lives. In the 20 years since the US combat mission began in Afghanistan, the death toll in the region has been in the many tens of thousands. The Afghan national military and police alone have lost 66,000 personnel in the last two decades of the conflict, while the American service members killed in the region amount to 2,448.  Over 47,245 Afghan civilians have perished in this war that they didn’t choose, while the Taliban and other opposition fighters lost 51,191 lives.
