World Yoga Day: Yoga is about making connections, not breaking them

The article first appeared in The Indian Express on June 20, 2022.

Yoga, derived from the Sanskrit word “yuj,” meaning “to join,” embodies the essence of unity—connecting the body, mind, and spirit. Far more than a physical practice, yoga is both an art and a science of holistic living. 21st June of every year observed to be World Yoga Day or International Yoga Day.  We celebrate this ancient discipline that transcends borders, religions, and cultures, offering a universal path to health, harmony, and self-realization.

The origins of yoga trace back to Vedic culture, where it was revered as a spiritual practice. Hiranyagarbha, a figure mentioned in ancient texts, is credited with preaching yoga at the dawn of creation. Over time, sages like Maharishi Patanjali codified and structured its teachings. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras remain foundational, defining yoga as a means to control the mind and achieve liberation. Other luminaries, such as Jaimini, further developed yoga, ensuring its accessibility to all.

Yoga is not confined to physical postures (asanas) alone. It encompasses a comprehensive philosophy that emphasizes balance, discipline, and mindfulness. By harmonizing the body and mind, yoga fosters self-awareness and inner peace. This is why many believe that yoga is not just a therapy for ailments but a transformative journey of self-development. It provides tools to navigate life’s challenges while cultivating mental clarity, emotional stability, and physical well-being.

In Indian culture, yoga has always held a special place as a path to self-realization. It teaches that true health arises when the body is strong, the mind is calm, and the soul is aligned with a higher purpose. Regular practice of yoga promotes physical fitness, reduces stress, and encourages a balanced lifestyle. Its techniques, such as pranayama (breath control) and dhyana (meditation), are scientifically proven to enhance mental focus and emotional resilience.

World Yoga Day serves as a reminder of yoga’s enduring relevance in modern life. In a world often characterized by division, yoga offers a way to reconnect—not only with ourselves but with others and the universe. By fostering unity and well-being, yoga helps us transcend barriers, embracing a life of peace and harmony.

As we roll out our mats this World Yoga Day, let us honor this ancient practice that continues to guide humanity toward physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual growth. Yoga is not just a discipline; it is a way of life.
