With donations to philanthropic causes totalled ₹1,161 crore, he donated ₹3 crore per day in the FY 2022. Such has been his consistency in giving away that it is only 8 percent lower than his donations in FY 2021.

The billionaire toppled Azim Premji to grab the first spot. The latter made it to the second spot with ₹484 crore donation, while Mukesh Ambani made it to third spot with ₹411 crore donation.

This is the ninth annual ranking of the most generous individuals in India and this year’s EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022 features individuals who have donated ₹5 crore or more during the period under review.

Interestingly, education is the most favoured cause among India’s philanthropists, with 69 donors – including the top three – Shiv Nadar, Azim Premji and Mukesh Ambani – cumulatively donating ₹1,211 crore.

Born in 1945 in Tamil Nadu to Sivasubramaniya Nadar and Vamasundari Devi, Shiv Nadar pursued his degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from PSG College of Technology. It was in 1967 he began his career as an engineer at Walchand Group’s Cooper Engineering (COEP) in Pune. A few years later, he left his job to start Televista with Ajai Chowdhry. Later, the duo together founded HCL Tech in 1976 to manufacture microprocessors and calculators.
