It was 2002, she was all of 26, had just gotten married and begun a career as a teacher. But Satarupa Majumder was far from satisfied.

What she saw there changed many things: both for her and the community. The area with a population of 2 lakh didn’t have one decent school and the children whiled away their time rolling beedis for their parents. Satarupa went on to establish the region’s first and only English medium school and today has over 600 students studying at the CBSE institution that is impacting lives in the Sundarbans in more ways than one.
