The year was 2002 and Bala V Balachandran’s life was hanging by a thread as he underwent a quintuple bypass. In a surreal moment of out-of-body experience that the idea to set up a management institute in Chennai struck him. Once he recovered, he got to work founding Great Lakes Institute of Management, one of the leading B-schools in the country today.
