Manthan was India’s first crowdfunded film

The 1976 film Manthan by Shyam Benegal became India’s first crowdfunded film. Based on Amul’s white revolution, the film was made with ₹2 contribution from farmers. It was for the first time that milk producers turned film producers with Shyam Benegal’s directorial venture. With no money to produce the film, Milkman of India, Verghese Kurien stepped in and asked the farmers from his co-operative to pitch in money from their wages so that their stories could be told to millions of people. Manthan, which was financed by the farmers, not only covered its cost on its release but also made a profit within first two weeks.
